《弥次喜多隐密道中》是1971年10月7日至1972年3月30日期间，由日本电视台联播网每周四20:00 - 20:56（JST）播出的连续电视时代剧，全26集，2016年于BSジャパン重播。 故事设定在天保年间，幕府派往各地监视诸藩的官方密探接连被识破身份并惨遭杀害，陷入困境。时任首席老中水野忠邦想出奇招，决定启用非职业人员替代传统伊贺与甲贺忍者执行密探任务。他召见了两人，分别是贫困旗本次子村上弥次郎，以及原伊贺忍者出身的捕快青山喜多八。 水野忠邦为掩盖二人真实身份，制造切腹假象并注销其原有户籍，任命他们为幕府密探。不过这两人都有致命弱点，弥次郎平时古板得近乎迂腐，饮酒后性情却会大变；喜多八武艺高强，但一见到美人就会原形毕露。这对性格截然不同的搭档伪装起来，身着条纹披风与三重斗笠，以「伊势神宫朝圣」为幌子，踏上了铲除各地恶势力的旅程。

弥次さんと喜多さんはお江戸日本橋を出発点に旅に出て、開化の港である浦賀へ向かいます。彼らは国際使節として、悪役人によって黒船に連れ去られたお春の娘おきんに同情を寄せます。一方、酒場クロブネではストリッパーのキッス襲撃で大混乱になります。二人は箱根を越え、大磯から小田原へ進み、宿で女按摩師に惹かれた後、おきんを連れて下田へ向かいます。しかし、唐人お吉で有名な下田港に着くと、お春は既に長崎へ連れ去られていました。疲れ果てた二人は、おきんの胸に「情ある方は長崎までお連れ下さい」と書き、海路で清水港へ向かいます。船の中で浪曲師虎造と知り合い、盛り上がった話の途中で再びおきんを見つけます。清水港では島倉村のお千代の音頭で祭りが大盛況で、奉納相撲大会では横綱富士の山と森の石松が対戦します。石松が投げ出されて怒って起こした大喧嘩も、清水の次郎長の仲裁で無事に収まります。やがて二人は浜松へ着き、峠で幽霊の総攻撃を受けてノイローゼになり、宿の床に倒れます。
